When you rake the berries, you use a rectangular basket with teeth on one edge. As the teeth run through the plants, they pull the berries and a lot of other plant material off. You can then either pick through what you've raked by hand (again, the hard way) or they have filtering machines that blow air through the material and send leaves and small branches flying while the berries stay put.
